My first post on Seoul is about most peoples' favourite activity - SHOPPING!! All my skincare, cosmetics, and clothes purchases were bought in Myeongdong, with the exception of a few make up items bought in duty free stores outside of Myeongdong. I spent the most on skincare and cosmetics, very little on clothes as I have SO MANY new and unworn clothes due to years of impulsive blogshopping. So, I will write about skincare/cosmetics only.

The products that I bought are those that have drawn numerous stellar reviews based on my research. I'm sure many other brands such as Holika Holika, Tony Moly, Nature Republic, Belif and The Saem have their own 'star products' too, but I can't possibly buy every single item for which I see an excellent review, neither did I have the time to do such an extensive research. Nevertheless, I always love to try out new products, so feel free to suggest things to buy should I make another trip to Korea in future!

Getting the refund is only the first step in completing the tax refund. In the picture above, I received a cash refund of 9,000 KRW, but had to put up a guaranteed deposit of 16,571 KRW.

At the airport, we still had to go to the airport tax refund counter to get a stamp of approval. If you fail to do so you'll lose your deposit. The tax refund officer is supposed to see our purchases (yup, you have to dig out your loots from your bursting luggage to literally SHOW the officer what you bought). This means you should visit the tax refund counter before you check your luggages in, in the event that you are required to open your bags to show the officer your purchases. It's troublesome and retarded, I know. However, because a queue had formed, the officer swiftly stamped our receipts without asking to see our purchases, otherwise, it would just hold up the queue. I guess it's a matter of luck. I was told that a friend on a separate trip was required to show the officer his purchases as he was the first in line and there was no queue behind him. However, the queue formed while he was being "checked", so subsequently, the officer let the rest of the queue passed without them having to show their buys.

If you're working on a tight timeline, I suggest you utilize the discount coupons that can be found on the interest (google 'coupons' for shopping in Seoul' or something like that) instead of attempting to get your tax refunds. In fact, if I were to do this again, I would be more diligent in searching for and remembering to use my coupons, and skip the tax refunds altogether.

Time has flown since we got together during our university days, and we are fortunate to celebrate our 3rd year together. Instead of having a nice dinner at a posh restaurant, we decided to have a staycation this time round. Our first was at Hard Rock Hotel, and the second at Marina Bay Sands (for my 24th birthday). We opted for RWS again, but went for its newest hotel - Equarius Hotel.

We bought the grand opening package, which included a 3D2N hotel stay with breakfast at any of RWS' hotels (except for Crockford Hotel I think), 2 tickets each for Universal Studios, Adventure Cove, and SEA Aquarium. It cost us $728 ($628 for other RWS hotels), and I must say it's a good deal! What attracted us to RWS is it's many activities that can be found within one location!

Had lunch at The Greenhouse at Ritz Carlton before checking in. They offer quality buffet at a reasonable price. If you would like to try it out, I would recommend the lunch buffet as it is more affordable. But if you're all out to eat, you would probably get their full buffet during weekend dinners. Other than the roast chicken, I was satisfied with all the food that I tried. I was particularly impressed by their ice cream spread. Most buffets tend to focus on their mains but serve average or even substandard ice cream. The ice cream here however, was superb and definitely on par with premium-quality gelatos/sorbets sold elsewhere. I kept going back for more!

Upon checking in, we were delighted to be told that we were entitled to an additional complimentary night's stay as our stay dates fell within a certain promotional period. Although we were given a room on a smoking floor (I had requested for a non-smoking room), the view of the Adventure Cove and the mainland more than made up for it. Equarius Hotel was slightly more expensive than the other RWS hotels, but I thought it was well worth the money as our room (and the bathroom too) was bigger than the one in Hard Rock, and all rooms come with a balcony too! The only drawback is that it is the furthest hotel from the Resorts World atrium, about twice the time you would talk to walk from Hard Rock to the atrium. However, this did not inconvenient us greatly as the shuttle buses that brought us to and from Equarius were regular.
Our first day was spent with a short visit to Universal Studios, followed by dinner at Chili's. Since it wasn't our first time at USS, we only went for the more exciting rides or new rides we haven't tried before. Each queue was about 5 minutes long only. I believe the most crowded hours are in the morning and early afternoon, when visitors are "chionging" the rides. As USS is small, they would be done by mid-afternoon, so when we were there in the late afternoon, the park was visibly less crowded. This was also our experience during our first time there. So if you want an "efficient" visit to the park, I would advise going there from mid-afternoon onwards.

The highlight of the second day was Adventure Cove. We had wanted to try the Segway, but they were fully booked for a corporate event. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we headed to Adventure Cove first, earlier in the day when the sun was still out. Adventure Cove is pretty small as well, in terms of time spent there, we took about the same amount of time as USS (3 hours) to cover the water park. Similar to USS, it seemed like the queues for the water rides had subsided by the time we were there, which was in the early afternoon. We spent about 20 minutes each queuing for our first two rides, and 10 minutes each for the rest. There were about 5 water rides to try in total. I liked that Adventure Cove also added a mini aquarium for visitors to snorkel in, because it adds variety to its park. The water in aquarium is really cold though! Do laze in the Adventure River too! I liked how different decors we presented at different parts of the river. Didn't take any pictures because my stuff were kept in the locker.

For those staying at Equarius, it's about a 7-minute walk from the hotel. There is a side entrance which looks like a little wooden hut, at the end of a side road. Do look out closely for it as it is easy to miss, we did!

We checked out the pool on the 3rd day. I envy those who get to stay in the villa (I heard that booking a villa is by invitation only). How nice it is to just step out of your villa and frolic in the pool, on a sun bed! We did not visit the SEA Aquarium as we've already been there before.
period calls for more events. A fellow model/talent once told me that
she would still continue working in this industry despite already having
a full time job, because if you have the energy to earn more while
you're still young, why not? I fully agree with that. Besides, I get
paid relatively well for something that I like to do, so why should I
stop myself? So if anyone were to ask me why I still continue in this
line if I have another job, this is my answer. Of course, I always
ensure that my sideline jobs do not affect my main one.

So here's what I've been up to.

All the ladies

We were dressed in a cute bunny outfit - it's one of my favourite event
outfits so far! I like the corset in particular, because it defines and
shapes the torso, and can be worn on normal occasions too. However, it
was strung a tad too tightly on me, which means my power back was kept
arched throughout the night. It was not very comfortable to be honest.

Nevertheless, it was still a great event to be at as it was held in W
Hotel (my first time there, as well going through Sentosa Cove!) and the
night was filled with interesting activities, with Chua Enlai as their
host. Based on that event, it seems like Samsung treats their guests
really well! I would have loved to check out the yatches but
unfortunately we weren't needed there as the programme at that area was
cancelled due to the bad weather. W Hotel looked so beautiful, but sadly I didn't have time to explore the place.

With Sheena! :) :) :)

Above all, I was really glad to have Sheena as my fellow bunny for the
night! I first met her at a casting a few years back I think, and
subsequently at a couple of events. We got off really well because she
is so easy-going and sweet! She has become more popular as a model and
also started a blog recently. I'm happy to see her doing well!

nomnomnom

Because the event started early, most of us did not have dinner and we were FAMISHED at the end of the night. We stopped by the hawker centre outside St James for some hokkien mee, which tasted especially awesome (probably because food usually tastes good whenever you're starving). We managed to catch the last few trains home (and saved money on cab fare, yay!), and I enjoyed chatting with Sheena. Good
company always brings the fun factor of work up a notch higher! :)

Another event with plenty of things to do and good food to eat for the
guests. They even had a live snake for the guests to take photos with! I
believe this is an albino python that I was holding. For those who are squeamish with snakes, I think the best way to hold them is to just relax and be still. This python was really tame, just very long and muscular and kept coiling all over my body.

Michelle Chong was the emcee for that night, and I wished I could have taken a picture with her! I find her an established and respectable lady.

Bought this in a darker colour - Midnight Blue - as I already had enough light-coloured cheongsam dresses. This piece also caught my eye as it did not look strictly oriental despite the beautiful embossed details on the fabric.

I opted for size M again as in the studio photos, the dress looked
slightly over-stretched at the hips area. It turns out that the fabric
isn't stretchable at all, which limits my strides. Size M was also a
little loose on me as size S is my usual LB size. It fits me alright at the PTP, but is slightly loose at the waist and hips. However I'm not sure
if size S would have been too tight around the hips for me and cause the
dress to ride up when walking. Nevertheless, I won't mind trading this
for the same piece in size S.

As for the material, I really like the gorgeous embossed details. For
the price, I would have expected it to come with an inner lining, but
it's not much of an issue as VPL is not visible at all.

Overall, I think it's a good buy as the dress can definitely be worn for normal occasions too, and not just CNY! mystatuesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13696859432075220846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4468537118974864005.post-52003986777118130552013-02-19T20:51:00.000+08:002013-03-04T08:33:00.865+08:00Chinese New Year 2013Chinese New Year is one of the very few or only occasion in the year
where businesses and many other activities come to a stand still,
including my gym sessions and diet-watching. I don't regret it though
(just need to get back on track quickly), and here's why.

1) Food galore

For each day of the CNY holiday, I've only had one meal a day. However,
each meal lasted 6 to 8 hours long. After eating, I snack. After
snacking, I eat. It's just not the time to deny all the delectable
home-cooked dishes laid out at every house visit. Some of my favorites
are:

Fried chicken wings

I don't have many pictures of food because I was really too busy eating. Sigh. Anyway, my uncle usually prepares and marinades the chicken wings, and they are fried at my Grandma's place. Yes there are many awesome chicken wings out there, but home-cooked ones can be just as good too!

Ayam Buak Keluak

This is a Peranakan dish, with nuts from the Pangium edule or kepayang tree as the main ingredient. The flesh of the nuts is mixed with chicken, chilli paste, and other spices to produce a rich gravy. My mum makes this every year and it's a must have for me. I'm happy that I'm usually one of the first few visitors to my grandma's place, and I make sure I get to savour the nuts (at least 4 nuts in one go) before they are finished by my other relatives.

Do you know that the raw seeds are actually poisonous? They contain cyanide which can cause fatalities if consumed in a high quantity.
Over at my mum's side, we have steamboat for our 团圆饭. In recent year, the hot plate stove was mobilized as well. Ever since then, I only cook at and eat from the hot plate because I totally dig hot plate / barbequed food.
I only pick out the crackers for this dish. Heh. It is still fun to join in the tossing with family and friends though!

These are some of my favourite snacks. It explains my 6- to 8-hour long meals. I had a slight sore throat pre-CNY, from munching on these goodies. By the end of 初三 it developed into a full-blown sore throat from the incessant overindulgence. Well done.
I've never been much of a pineapple tart fan until I tried this particular one from Katong. I first tasted it when my colleague brought it to office. The pineapple paste is sweet, moist and tangy, and I really like nibbling on the pineapple 'fibre'. I think the winning component is the pastry, it's light and buttery, with a slight crisp to it. My colleague asked for the tarts to be baked a little browner for that extra crisp.

I doubt I'll be open to trying pineapple tarts from elsewhere after having this heavenly little treat. The only drawback is that I don't know where exactly this shop is located. All I have is a handphone number, but I have not been successful in contacting them despite multiple tries. I'll be relying on my colleague to help me order them for now.

This is highly addictive. I've been having a little of this everyday ever since I got my hands on them, and I never fail to look out for these crackers when CNY is around the corner. I don't know what makes it so addictive.. perhaps it's because it is shaped like fries, which makes snacking on it really easy as compared to your regular palm-sized prawn crackers?
美珍香 seems to be the dominant player in this barbequed pork jerky market, but I personally prefer those which are sliced thinner (don't fancy the thicker ones from 美珍香). The only type of ba kwa that I really like from 美珍香 is their Gourmet Bakkwa (has bacon in it). I remember being unable to stop snacking on this particular brand of ba kwa at my boyfriend's place. It looked as thin as the picture above, and according to the article where this picture came from, this brand is Kim Hwa Guan (金华源). I don't recall having been there before, but I'll be sure to check it out the next time I'm in Chinatown! I also tend to heat my ba kwa till the edges turn a little black, because I like them crisp!
2) Pretty dresses
keeping the unworn pieces as they are unique, and I hope to find
another suitable occasion to don it.
Following my review of the Ruby version, I received the Cream one a few days later. Although it's the same size, it feels slightly, just slightly longer and looser than the Ruby dress, but I have no complaints. Similar to the Ruby one, the lace pattern is also lined with gold thread.

Now I'm trying to kick the bad habit of keeping the exact same piece of clothe in different colours, so I would like to let go of one. The problem is, I can't make up my mind. Ruby is a gorgeous and striking colour, but I'm not sure if I would wear it out on normal days - would you? Cream on the other hand is more muted, which might make it hmm.. a bit less outstanding?

Would love to hear your opinions!
I was captivated when I saw Beatrice wearing this on her blog, and I told myself that I had to get my hands on this one. I did not manage to snag it during the launch, but I'm glad that they opened a backorder and it arrived earlier than expected. I was confident that size S was suitable for me as it fitted well on Beatrice.

The blue is brilliant, the lace soft, smooth and intricately designed. For taller ladies, the dress reaches to the knee, which lets it double as an elegant work, shift dress too. Though stretchy, it fits snugly when worn, so seamless undies are recommended. There is no side or back zip, so do note that one will have to do some wriggling into the dress. Hence, if you're wearing this to a nice dinner date or event, I suggest that the dress be worn before you apply your makeup as you would definitely want to avoid smearing your makeup.

For me, I think I've been consistent with what I've set out to do so far.

1) Get my driving license

I signed myself up for driving lessons again and have been making good progress, partially thanks to understanding instructors from the driving school who try to clear as much as possible for each lesson upon knowing that I was a student with the school before.
I'm now waiting to book my practical test and really hope I'll do well this time. Fingers crossed!

2) Join the O School Recital

No updates for this as the auditions and trainings for the recital only start in the second half of the year.

3) Read more, 2 books a months

Have been sticking to this too. The first two books I read this year
were The Timekeeper by Mitch Albom, and Beautiful Disaster by Jamie
McGuire. I might as well do a short review on them too.

The Timekeeper

I liked how the story was written quite simply, as if you're reading a script for a play. I always thought it would be difficult to describe or write about something so intangible such as time, even more so as we experience 'time' every moment of our lives. Therefore, I loved how the author brought a fresh perspective to such an abstract and everyday concept - he essentially gave life to something that we in reality, find so simple and universal.

In particular, I liked how the process of Dor's discovery of time, and the development of time measurement was described. It gets better when we find out how Dor controls time, and uses it at the climax of the story - where he, Sarah's and Victor's lived get entwined. The interjection of fantasy with everyday reality makes this a refreshing and creative novel.

Beautiful Disaster

A typical story of good girl meets bad playboy and he falls madly in love with her and she changes his life forever. This story started off with a splendid portrayal of how both were hopelessly attracted to each other, but were trying in vain to stay away from each other. It gets rosy when the female protagonist finally submits to her desire and emotions - but only to leave him the very next day. It is revealed that she was deeply unsure and apprehensive about their relationship due to her emotional baggage from a broken family. However, to me, it seemed like she was merely being indecisive, leading to a series of dramatic break ups and getting back together in the later part of the novel. I found this extremely annoying.

In addition, the book reeks too much of idealism. Yes, some of that is good in a tale of romance, but this was just overboard. For example, Travis reverts to his violent behavior whenever he is heartbroken, or does not hesitate to punch the daylights of out men who try to get funny with Abby. Personally, I wouldn't accept someone who uses physical violence to seek comfort or scare people away as you never know if he could one day use it on you too. The conservative side of me also shakes a disdainful at how quickly they got married too. Seemed like a lifetime decision made on flitting teenage love to me.

I'm not sure why this was one of the bestsellers when I visited Times. I would advise interested readers not to expect too much from this book.

My next read will be The Casual Vacancy by J.K Rowling. It's another best seller and I'm looking forward to find out if she still delivers as well as her Harry Potter series.
Ta-dah!

I'm not insanely fit - I can't do 5-minute planks nor run a marathon, but the progress I see is encouraging. *beams happily*

It feels good to be working out, knowing that I will definitely see some progress every time I exercise, be it in terms of physical fitness or energy level. Exercising does improve one's psychological well-being indeed, as you take your mind off a day's or week's work and refresh yourself with a good night's sleep for the next day.

Regular exercise also on the overall, result in a long list of health benefits.
Seeing how the dress seemed to be tight around the hips of the models (from the pictures it looked a bit too stretched at their hips), I decided to opt for a size M, and it was a good choice. By the way, do you notice that many of the online shops' cheongsams seem to have a smaller cut? I can usually fit into size S for most dresses, but I would need a size M for the cheongsams to fit me comfortably.

It was love at first touch for this dress. The Gabardine rayon blend and the lace were soft and smooth! The lace is not scratchy at all, which is an important point as it covers much of the back. Fabric wasn't too thick either, which made for a comfortable wear in this ridiculously hot weather that typifies these several weeks. The highlight of this piece is the low-back lace design with non-functional buttons. It brings out a sultry vibe, while not being too revealing for CNY visits to perhaps, some conservative relatives. A stick on bra was worn with the dress as the lace part ends below the bra line. Do note that despite having an inner lining, nude and seamless underwear is still required as the fabrics aren't very thick.

This dress doesn't come across as being too festive-looking to me. My only gripe is that despite sizing up to and M, it still rides up a little when I walk. So if you intend to buy this, do note the hip measurements as they might be exceptionally small. For me, because it only rides up a little, I'm willing to put up with the slight hassle of having to pull the dress down when I walk, and will keep this piece.

Does anyone know how else to prevent dresses/skirts from riding up?
When I saw the previews, I was sold by the inverse-V-shaped design of the back. Again I decided on size M as the dress appeared taut at the models' hips. Indeed, size M was just nice for me and S would have been too tight. I'm awed by the gold trimmings throughout this lace dress. A stick on bra was worn with the dress as the drop-back feature ends below the bra line. I'll decide whether to keep this after I've tried the Cream version (just bought it from another seller).

Yet another hot seller from Love Bonito. Size M is comfortable around my hips and slightly loose around my waist, but this can be easily corrected with a belt. I'm not sure if size S would have been a better fit, but the person who sold this to me said that her sister was a UK6/8 and found size S too snug for her.

I was expecting more from this dress - thought it would be of bodycon material, similar to the Oregon Dress, but it turned out thinner than what I had in mind. I suppose that this material had to be used in order for the prints to be made on it. It comes with an inner lining so no VPL worries here. The prints are vivid and certainly true to pictures.

While this is overall still a good buy, I won't mind letting it go if there is an interested buyer.

Close up of the pretty floral prints!

This is the second peplum skirt that I own. I usually avoid peplum skirts or dresses as I feel that peplums that "flare" too much emphasise my hips - I think that they are usually more suited for really skinny girls with unbelievably small waists.
However, I decided to take a gamble when I saw the preview pictures on the OhVola blog. Besides the attractive floral prints, the "flare" of the peplum appeared to be fairly moderate. I'm glad I took a chance on this one! Really adore the sweet florals and the peplum feature doesn't over-emphasise my hips. Material is thick enough but soft as well, and comes with an inner lining, so no worries about VPL here. I opted for size M as I believe OhVola's apparels have a smaller cut sometimes. While it does fit me nicely and does not ride up, I think the skirt will look better if it's shorter (on the right picture, folded part of the skirt to see what it would look like shorter). Will keep it if I can have it altered.
Close up of the lace details

This is my first purchase from Love Bonito's string of CNY collections. I've been careful to avoid cheongsams as I would probably only wear them during CNY, and it would be such a waste to do so, no matter how pretty a cheongsam may be. I finally gave in to this one (and the Lorenze Cheongsams which I will review in another post) as it did not come across as being to oriental and festive.
While I really like the fuschia colour and lace, it still seems just a bit too festive for wearing on normal occasions. Tried to leave the collar unbuttoned to tone it down. It's a great top with an awesome cut that fits the torso well, the fabric is also of good quality. However, for the above reason I'm still undecided on whether to keep or let this go.. what do you think?
New Year's Day is a few weeks over but it's never too late to make one's resolutions, yes?

I would use to make overly-ambitious resolutions such as, learning 4 new dance genres for the year or eating healthily. Needless to say, they never came to pass. In my mind, to learn and master a new dance genre takes A LOT of time, practice and money to go for dance classes, a commitment which I couldn't fully afford. As for eating healthily, my expectation was having fruits and vegetables in my diet everyday and I don't fervently note what I eat for every meal.

I guess the approach should be to set realistic and clearly defined expectations for our resolutions. By realistic I mean for example, learning 1 new dance genre for the year. Definitely far more possible than learning 4. To clearly define would be to tell myself, I will have fruits at least 3 times a week and a salad at least once a week, instead of leaving definition "eating healthily" open-ended. By doing so, I would be able to gauge how I was doing, and setting a realistic goal is motivating as you know you have a good chance of achieving it.

So what are my resolutions for 2013? Like I've said, I want them to be rational. I've divided them into 'major' and 'minor' goals.

Major goals

1) Get my driving license. However long the process may be, it's undeniably a very useful skill to have. The cost of driving lessons have increased significantly since I last failed my first test in 2011. I have to get that license ASAP before they become any more expensive.

2) Join the O School Recital. I've always wanted to do this, but back in school, it would always clash with my exams. When it was finally scheduled on a non-exam period, I had started working and thought I couldn't commit the time and effort. Nevertheless, I want to have this experience at least once.

Minor goals

1) Read more, 2 books a month. This was inspired by Thought Catalog's 6 New Year's Resolutions That Are Worth Keeping. I do agree that reading is brain food.

2) Gym at least once every 2 weeks. I do need to condition my body more to dance better.

So this is how I made my resolutions - whether I meet them or not will be a clear 'yes' or 'no'.

I also want to find myself and find my dance self. I'm not making these two official because I still don't know how to define how to get there. It's somewhat like discovering what you love to do or what you're really good at, and developing it, especially as a career (because would we want to spend the rest of our working lives doing something that we're not passionate about?). It's something intangible and deep, but I think many people my age want or need to do this. Dance-wise, let's just say I'm experiencing Diminishing Marginal Returns to dance, and I need a breakthrough in this area too.

I've been really selective of my online purchases so as to avoid
over-buying in the midst of so many online shops spamming us with their Chinese New Year collections. This top isn't CNY-themed, but I have so much love for
it! Its outstanding features are the sweetheart neckline, bust area
padded with an extra layer of fabric (something slightly thinner than the padding found in sports bras), and the peplum cut that is not too
pong. I usually avoid peplums as they 'flare' too much around my waist. I think peplums look great on petite girls. For taller people like me, they tend to make my torso look really short (and hence, my legs look really long), thereby making my upper to lower body ratio look somewhat disproportionate. The material is somewhat similar to the Love Bonito Payton Peplum Top,
albeit slightly thinner, but still of great quality. Colour is true to
pictures too.

If you're still in a dilemma on whether to join the backorder for
this, I would strongly encourage you to. :)
Love Bonito Nathalia Dress (Beryl, size S)

Got this using the 20% discount code that Love Bonito offered last month. Another
quality buy! The dress comes with a anti-slip sweetheart neckline and
boned at the bodice. The inner lining ends around mid-thigh level. I
like the light-weightiness of the chiffon too! The end of the fish tail
is quite long though (you can see it almost touches the floor even for
my height), so it is recommended that this dress be worn with heels.
This cafe has been drawing an increasing number of raves about its cakes and pancakes. When some of my Caderas friends decided to meet up, I was glad that Jean suggested TFBB for brunch!

My first impressions of TFBB were,

1) The size was no bigger than a typical Starbucks cafe. It is indeed popular, especially on weekends, so making reservations in advance is highly recommended.

2) It seemed to be a lean business. Saw about 2 to 3 waiters/waitresses and the boss himself. The menu is only available at the counter, order is to be placed at the cashier, and you'll have to get the cutlery from a common tray yourself.

Delectable-looking cakes

We were given a couch near the pavement. Although the sunlight could be shielded by the blinds, it was humid as winds from the fans to bring ventilation to the inner parts of the cafe did not reach that corner.

These were our orders for the day.
1) House Cottage Pie - $14

TFBB Description: Beef mince cooked in country-style tomato sauce with dollops of potato mash and cheese, baked till golden and bubbly.

The combination of creamy and soft mashed potato with a generous serving of mince beef, topped with baked cheese made this dish absolutely delish. The tomato sauce was neither overly-sour or tasteless. I love to eat baked cheese, and a little more of that would have been perfect. Charlotte, Aaron and I shared this while waiting for Jean, and we were actually half-full when we finished it!

2) Chocolate Chip Pancakes - $7.50

These flapjacks were soft and fluffy, and mixed with the right amount of chocolate chips. I have a sweet tooth, so being provided with a bottle of maple syrup for us to drizzle as much of it as we wanted made me a happy girl.

3) Garlic Fries with Truffle Aioli - $9.50

Fries lovers will love these thick, crisp, straight-cut fries that were served hot and fresh from the kitchen. While I didn't taste much of the garlic, I liked the subtle taste of truffle. A few found the truffle flavour too strong though, but to me it's still a good starter to have if you are with a group of friends.

4) Towkay Ng's Eggs Benedict - $10.50

TFBB description: 2 poached eggs served on a toasted brioche, sauteed spinach, roasted rosemary potatoes and an Italian version of a Hollandaise.

Somehow the way the eggs wobbled when being served reminded me of boobies, haha. I only had a morsel of this dish as it was Jean's, but thoroughly enjoyed it. The eggs were done well and the brioche was toasted to a lovely brown. Loved the potatoes which were roasted till their skins were crisp but remained soft on the inside. Jean wiped out her plate, haha. It's great to have a delightful brunch at such an affordable price!
5) Balik Kampung Chicken Wings - $14.00

TFBB description: My Mum’s malay style marinade, oven fried served with a portion of fries on the side.

This was the highlight of the day. We were stuffed by now, but were miraculously able to devour our last item for the day. The wings were served freshly fried. One bite into it and you know it's not your average wing. The burst of a divine mix of spices from the marinade made this such a delectable treat. Whatever this secret marinade is, it will definitely have me coming back for more.
We were beyond satiated at the end of lunch. Don't be fooled by the lively expressions, we were struggling to stay out of a food coma. The bill amounted to about $14 per person, which was very reasonable for the 5 dishes we ordered. Would have loved to try the cakes, but we were already bursting at the seams. It gives us a good reason to be back here! Sharing of dishes is highly recommended as the portions were generous.mystatuesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13696859432075220846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4468537118974864005.post-9364939271621501972013-01-01T22:02:00.000+08:002013-03-05T20:45:27.295+08:00EventsCanon Dealers' Night @ Shanghai Dolly
It was indeed fun to revel in the party in the lively and boisterous atmosphere, and it's great that the weather held up.

I was situated at the HTC booth. It was really nicely done! I like the lighted HTC sign at the top which revolves!

Party goers could visit the booth to get airbrushed tattoos, body paints that glowed in the dark, and polarioids printed by HTC's devices! They could also write messages on a wall at the end of the booth.

I got a few tattoos and body paints for myself too! They were really pretty! I liked the tattoos so much I applied powder over them after showering and before going to bed everyday for the next couple of days. It's said that baby powder helps to preserve the tattoos, presumably by absorbing any sebum produced by the body that causes the tattoos to wear out.
This
is my first purchase from VGY, and their customer service was
impeccable. This size was initially out of stock, so they offered me
size XS instead, to which I replied that I intended to head down to
their physical store to try on XS first before deciding on it. Shortly
after, I was told that they had contacted their supplier and managed to
get hold on a piece in size S. What a pleasant surprise! Kudos to Eve
and Tricia for their patience and friendliness - I've been blog shopping
frequently over the past few years and this was truly a memorable
experience. Thank you for your efforts too. I believe that excellent
customer service is key to a successful business, and I hope that VGY
continues to grow and be prosperous!

Now for the dress.. Nothing
screams summer glam quite like the dainty floral prints on the cream
coloured base. The dress fits my ptp and waist perfectly, leaving the
rest of the cotton satin to cascade down my body gracefully. To me, it
is imperative that clothes are lightweight due to the terrible humidity
of our weather. As maxi dresses tend to be heavy due to their length, I
was delighted to find out that this was not the case with this dress,
even though it came with an inner lining. However, due to the light base
colour and lightness of the dress, nude undergarments are highly
recommended as my black undies are slightly visible underneath the
cloth.

I've never worn maxi dresses before, so I'm not sure when I'll wear this out. Perhaps to my friend's upcoming wedding dinner. :)
Had a hard time making a choice from the 4 colours - Purple, Skyblue,
Cream, Lipstick Pink. I though pink was the most unique of the lot, but I
was apprehensive about getting an all-pink dress as I've never though
of myself as someone would can carry off the "saccharine sweet" look (I
say pink fits fair ladies the best). However, I have no regrets buying
this baby. Love how the light chiffon material sways as I walk. I dig
lightweight clothes as they're great to wear in our hot, sunny weather.
The low, cross-back and asymmetrical hem reminds me of similar dresses
that contemporary dancers wear. The dress is fitting at the waist too.
Nipple pads were worn with this dress (I prefer them to stick on bras as
they are pretty much weightless). If a backorder is opened for this, I
strongly encourage you all to get one for yourselves too!
We can make promises to always be together, but I'm sure those who have been through relationships know well, how things can change and maybe destroy the relationship altogether. Hence, I always tell myself to take things as they come, treasure my time with him, and not take him for granted. But that doesn't mean I don't fear losing not just my boyfriend, but my very good friend as well.

Right now we're still in our honeymoon period. Things are easy for us, because we have similar lifestyles and interests, we have many mutual friends, and it's very easy for us to see each other often. This summer spent with him has been nothing less than awesome. I especially loved our time in New York, where seeing him just before I slept and when I woke up was so beautiful. I'm afraid that in time to come, our perspectives on life may change, especially when I, or we go out to work. Even without thinking so far ahead, there are other issues like other religious differences, which I think is a potentially huge one in my life. And when the school term starts, I foresee that I'll be very busy with academics, dance, work, and job applications, and I think this is gonna be a source of disagreements for us.

So I know that I may not be his last girlfriend, and this possibility is very real. Occasionally, it leaves me terribly frightened when I think about these things because he's been such a big part of my life and I can't imagine it without him. But I'll continue to love without regrets.

I'm sure I'll live through any heartbreak, but I really, rather not go through one.mystatuesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13696859432075220846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4468537118974864005.post-80835463558890856492010-07-12T22:53:00.003+08:002010-07-12T23:03:48.778+08:00If there's one thing that the crews at The Big Groove showed us, is that nothing is impossible. Many moves or stunts I thought wasn't humanely possible, they pulled it off perfectly.

I guess we're inspired now, to be better dancers. But I wonder how long this motivation will last. I notice that, for me, and maybe some Emixers, inspiration and motivation come in spurts. It takes a mind-blowing performance for us to be awestruck, and then feel encouraged to be better dancers. But somehow after a while, we forget or lose this drive, and end up stagnating, until we come across another dance event or workshop to spur us on again. Maybe it's because we get distracted and preoccupied with other stuff along the way.

Less the 1 week to New York, and I wonder why I feel like I still have a thousand things left to do.mystatuesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13696859432075220846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4468537118974864005.post-23876860141198183082010-07-09T00:16:00.004+08:002013-01-18T14:06:50.879+08:00what I've been up toYes I've been missing in action for a while. Not that I've been terribly busy, but somehow for the past several weeks I've filled my time doing other things rather than writing.

For the past 2 months, I've been occupied with:
- work
- dance
- Shiwei :)
- NYC planning

and other random stuff. Hmm I don't know how 2 months flew by me just like that.

Work has been fun most of the time. Having been in this industry for a while, I've realized that the girls are not as mean or bitchy as people think. Some may be quite ah lian, but everyone I've met so far were nice. Just don't back stab or bitch about people and nothing will happen to you.

Dance. I had my very own sharing session a couple of weeks back, and it's nice to get the chance to finally step up. Had a series of fulfilling workshops by local choreographers, followed by the dance battle a week later. I don't care what people say, I still think that event was stupid and pointless. Shall not harp more about it, but I had a really bad day that day. We're preparing for NY (which is less than 2 weeks away), Vivace and Convoc now. I've come to not expect much for our NY performance, but rather learn and enjoy everything else instead. My choreography is one of those that will be used for Vivace, and it's great to be taking ownership of my creation! :)

Shiwei and I will celebrate our 4th month today! Pretty fast huh! He's away on a cruise now, so we'll go out after he comes back.

School's starting soon, and I have mixed feelings about it. I told myself that I'm gonna play hard this summer, and when school starts, I'm gonna work hard. I'm looking forward to a new semester of dance and learning new things, but I know I have to apply for jobs, which I'm so apprehensive about. Still haven't figured out what I want, other than the fact the I like to meet and interact with people. Will probably have to go for a bank first by default, but gosh, how am I suppose to work and fight for a job when I don't even know what I'll love?? How did the people in my spot make career decisions?

While we weren’t as neat or technically superb like the dancers from NRA, we were special. We made things out of music that one wouldn’t label as “hip hop”, and I think we did a pretty good job at it.

The NLB drama centre is a good place to dance at – nice foyer, showers in our dressing rooms, and well done stage lightings. Performance wise, I’m glad that the flow of items, the transitions and quick changes went smoothly. My first 3 items were the most demanding parts for me, because I had quick changes in between items, and quick change was the killer, not the dance itself, because although I was tired, I couldn’t just stand at a corner and catch my breath, but I had to stay focused and rush to change my costumes. Unlike dancing, there was no allowance for mistakes as that would mean that I wouldn’t be able to reach my next item on time, and that would leave me mentally shaken too. The most nerve-wrecking one was my 14-second quick change (I never had such a fast change before) from Country Boy to Shiwei’s item, and I’m glad my 3 dressers and I pulled it off. =)

Of course, I’m happy that Shiwei’s item went well too. All the couples finally executed their steps together correctly. We only had freaking 7 trainings for his item, and it was no doubt taxing, but hey, we did it! It was my most grueling item as dancing alongside him meant that I still had to keep up my strength and stamina in order to match up to him, despite having hardly anytime to recover from my previous items.

I don’t know if I’m happy & relieved or sad that this is over. Intersection was my bumpiest journey yet – while I had my pleasant, memorable moments, this period of time was also fraught with stress, angst, & fatigue. Although I'm glad that this is finally over, it does feel empty now that I’m not going to see and dance with the Emixers tonight. I don’t know how I managed to survive on an average of 5 hours of sleep each night for the past few weeks and go to work and dance training the next day, but I wouldn’t mind doing this just for a little longer.mystatuesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13696859432075220846noreply@blogger.com0
